Show Summary

“The Huddle” discussed the NFL in this week’s final segment. The NFL’s lockout is over, which has ended a period of uncertainty for Notre Dame’s undrafted free agents, many of whom have signed contracts with professional teams as the week progressed.

Tony Roberts is a legendary broadcaster who was the voice of Notre Dame football for 26 years on the Mutual and Westwood One radio networks. In 2005, he was honored with the Chris Schenkel Award, given annually by the National Football Foundation and the College Football Hall of Fame to a college football broadcaster who has excelled in his field and contributed to his community.

Long-time University of Notre Dame Sports Information Director Roger Valdiserri spent his 30 years at Notre Dame changing and advancing the profession of media relations at the collegiate level.

Valdiserri, a 1954 graduate of Notre Dame, was inducted into the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Hall of Fame, and was named one of the 100 most influential people in college football.

An institution when it comes to Notre Dame history, Lou Somogyi brings more than 20 years of veteran coverage to Blue and Gold Illustrated as senior editor and is a Notre Dame graduate. Author of “The Fifth Quarter” column, he earned Best Column honors from Collegiate Sports Publications Association in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. Lou provides the brand of unique perspective on Irish sports that’s found nowhere else in print or on the Internet.

Seven Irish players found themselves eligible for postseason awards over the past week, including senior quarterback Dayne Crist (Maxwell Award), junior tight end Tyler Eifert (Mackey Award), senior wide receiver Michael Floyd (Maxwell and Biletnikoff Awards), junior left tackle Zack Martin (Outland Trophy), fifth-year senior kicker David Ruffer (Groza Award), fifth-year senior safety Harrison Smith (Nagurski Award) and junior inside linebacker Manti Te’o (Bednarik and Nagurski Awards).
