Irish Blogger Gathering – Notre Dame vs Florida State – We goin’ BOWLing!

Dec 29, 2011 /

We goin’ bowling – we goin’ bowling. Okay, so it isn’t a BCS bowl but it sure beats 2007. The Irish take on FSU which will be no small task. They have a very good defense and their offense has had time to heal for this game. Expect this game to be won with speed. Coach Kelly has had a lot of time to re-tool the offense. Let’s hope that he came out of his workshop with plays that …um…work.

This blog is part of the IBG which is hosted this week by Her Loyal Sons. It was BYOB for this bowl addition of the gathering, which I thought was a little tacky but with the recession and the current plight of the North Alaskan penguin I thought that I would give them a break. But enough about the gathering…let’s get to the gathering!! I brought back two all-star leprechauns who have done a great job for me this year: 1960′s Lep and the Lady Leprechaun. I also brought in the Crystal Ball Leprechaun, who I suspect ate glue as a child, but ’tis the season for charity. On to the questions shall we? LEGHOOOOOOOOOO!!

1. FSU might start as many as 4 freshman on the offensive line. In 40 words or less, describe what you’re expecting to be the result of such a move.

If Diaco would just let these guys play, we would dismember them.  Whether or not that happens remains to be seen.

I can’t say hello in 40 words or less.

I expect ND to switch up alignments and personnel to give different, and hopefully, confusing (to FSU) looks, which should make life difficult for the inexperienced linemen.

I think ND’s defense will stop FSU at least 80% of the time.  The question will be whether or not FSU can hit the big plays – not unlike Michigan game

2. Lots of stuff Coach Kelly has been saying lately is getting people to believe that if Hendrix looks hot during the bowl game, he may just keep playing in the game. Give me 1 pro to that scenario and 1 con.

Pro: Confidence for Hendrix  Con:  Less confidence for Rees

The pro is obvious.  It might help you win the game.  Not sure what the con would be unless you had some kind of bet on Tommy Rees.

For purposes of this game … It’s better if we do not need Hendrix to replace Rees in this game – as occurred in Stanford game.  Ideally — they both do well and we win the game and the competition resumes next Spring.

3. If you’ve paid any attention at all, you know that the Champs Sports Bowl was officially a sell-out pretty darn quickly.  Meanwhile Virginia Tech is struggling to get their allotment of tickets to the Sugar Bowl sold.  Remember, the Champs Sports Bowl is a game between 2 very disappointed 8-4 programs longing for the glory days of yore.  So explain how this bowl sold out, and try to leave all the rah-rah stuff out of it.

1.  Orlando is easy to get to for FSU fans and ND fans travel easily anywhere (El Paso, TX anyone?)
2.  Two SEC teams are vying for the NC, leaving the Sugar Bowl sorely depleted.  The location isn’t ideal for either team – and Michigan, well, SUCKS!

Sorry, but the rah-rah stuff is a factor here.  Notre Dame travels well, and their fans buy tickets, partly because of that rah-rah stuff.  Florida State is obviously going to sell in Florida.  It’s a dream match-up for those promoters.  What are you supposed to say — Notre Dame fans are buying tickets because they want a reason to be near Mickey and Goofy?

Crystal Ball Leprechaun

This question is too easy – the answer is obvious in terms of the draw of both teams in this Bowl location.

4. Will there be an unexpected "hero of the game" for the Irish, or will such a hero prove useless, as the Irish blow out the Seminoles or the Seminoles take the game too far out of reach for the Irish for a hero to be effective?  If there will be a hero, who will it be?

I would somehow hope that Golic exceeded all expectations – but I’m not holding my breath.  Maybe Lynch causes a key fumble and recovers it.  After all, it was FSU that told him he couldn’t cut it at ND academically and recently tweeted about his 3.0 gpa.

If there’s a hero for ND, it might be Michael Floyd, which would not be unexpected, but he may want to put up a big effort in his final game.  If FSU takes him out of the game, then the next possibility would be Eifert, but I wouldn’t rule out Toma either.

Notre Dame’s best chance for a strong performance will be a strong running game — Cierre Wood.  A good running game will open up everything.

5. You Play. To Win. The Game. Unless you don’t.  In which case You Play. To Prepared. For Next Year.  Which would you prefer to see in this game?  And yes, it’s a binary choice.  Pick one.

Lady Leprechaun

I’m just not excited enough about this game to really care.  So I’m not picking either.  Okay, fine – I’ll choose winning so I can feel more comfortable wearing my ND beanie when it gets cold enough.

Play to win, period.  You can prepare for the game with an eye on next year, but the primary focus of being there is to win.  Always.

Crystal Ball Leprechaun

This is not really a serious question – you play to win this Bowl game.  Next year will take care of itself.
