NOTRE DAME, Ind. – There’s a new number 30 in town at Notre Dame and he could be ready to make an impact in the 2012 football season. Rocky Boiman was, arguably, the most prominent player to wear No. 30 for the Irish. Like Boiman, Ben Councell also plays outside linebacker for the Irish. Unlike Boiman, Councell does not have that fire red hair.
Councell played like he was on fire though at times during the first week of fall camp. Specifically, he was hard to block off the edge during last Wednesday’s live scrimmage that the media was able to watch. Notre Dame’s sophomore Dog Linebacker was consistently in the face of quarterbacks Everett Golson and Andrew Hendrix that afternoon – a bit of a surprise from a player who saw no playing time last fall.
“Last year was just so fast,” Councell said of his year of transition out of high school to Division One football. “But during the spring and into this camp everything’s kind of slowed down. I’ve kind of learned the system a whole lot better now. I’m starting to think about more in depth type things rather than ‘what am I gonna do on this play’, so it’s a lot different.”
